Famili Ria is an authentic Indonesian restaurant that has recently opened in a town called Surrey Hills.
It is located at 1115 Riversdale Rd, Surrey Hills VIC 3127, Australia. It is around the corner of Riversdale Rd and Elgar Rd. It is quite a dodgy end of Riversdale Rd. Be mindful when driving and looking for a car park there. It is quite narrow, and mind the tram as it is right the opposite of the last tram stop.
The restaurant is quite cozy with lots of space with big window glasses. Their main specialities are pempek dishes. The pempek is an authentic fish cake delicacy originated from Palembang, Indonesia. It is served with rich and sour sauce made from vinegar, palm sugar, and in some recipes they include tamarind sauce as well.
They have a few varieties of menu ranging from pempek itself, noodles, and rice dishes.
The pempek sauce is ranging from Sweet, Medium, and Spicy. Sweet is basically not spicy at all. The medium is quite hot for me, and don’t even think about the Spicy one.
The noodle dish is good too. I believe the noodle is a homemade one. The texture is chewy in a good way. The chicken meat is a little bit sweet, but in overall it is good.
There are two drawbacks with this restaurant though that you need to be aware of.
Firstly, the restaurant is a cash-only restaurant, and there are no ATMs nearby. I ended up spending $12 for items I didn’t really need at the nearby chemist just to cash out from their EFTPOS machine. They wanted a minimum of $10 to be spent at the shop to use their cash out facility.
Secondly, the dishes is rather small portion for a big guy like me. However, this is just a bias opinion. Do not really take me for credit on this one. It is just merely my opinion.
In summary, I was satisfied with the food and the service.
